I've used a climber's piece of hardware called "figure of eight" which attaches to my safety harness and around the rope of a spare halyard.
This allows for a controlled descent if needed.

George, you mention not using the snap-shackle which makes sense, so do you form an attachment some distance up the halyard, then attach the screw shackle?
