Hello there - 

9" pitch refers to the theoretical distance through the water the prop would
advance if there were no "slip"... ie if it were a screw going into wood, a
prop with a 9" pitch would advance 9" in one 360 degree rotation.

In practice the slip is huge.

My students at the marine college will be writing their exam on thursday...
funny you should ask that while I am compiling the questions!
