[Alberg30] Wood for Spreaders

While red oak is not recommended for rot reasons already mentioned, some boat builders and repair
people have used it anyway. Like Bob said, if it is available, people may use it. As long as it is
relatively protected by an epoxy coat or multiple coats of varnish or paint it may work for a fairly
long period. If my spreader were broke, I would probably replace it with Spruce, but if I could use
red oak and have my boat back in sailing order I might just use red oak, put protection on it and go
sailing while ordered me a piece of Spruce which I could make another one from and replace at end of
season. IN fact if one spreader broke I might order enough Spruce for two!
