I found the tiller to be a problem also. My solution sat to place a stainless 
steel universal joint on the rudder stock, add a 1 inch dia. stainless shaft 
about 16 inches long that runs vertically to the upper edge of the cockpit 
well. There I made a bearing bracket to hold the shaft. this new setup allows 
the toller to swing over the knees of everybody in the cockpit.

While I don't feel my equipment is the best, the concept works well.
