Bill,

On your vintage boat the rudder stock has a packing box on it. First try 
tightening the nut to stop the leak and if that doesn't work try re-packing 
it. It is a b*tch to reach, but I have done this by climbing into the 
lazarette and reaching it from there. I have also reached it by removing the 
engine. I have never cut a access hole though the side lockers, but I am 
sure someone has. Also, you should check for the leak while motoring since 
that is when the stern squats the most and forces the water up the rudder 
post.

Speaking of fuel tank locations and stuffing boxes. I have a small leak that
runs down in to the bilge from the stern. The underside of the cockpit floor
is dry, the lazaret is dry, I must conclude that I have a leak in the
stuffing box for the rudder post.
I read the article in the maintenance manual about cutting an access  door
in to the wall of the  cockpit locker, but what am I getting myself in to.
Has anyone had to do any work on the rudder post stuffing box.
I can not imagine trying to do anything one handed and without being able to
see it. By the way, SallyB is in the water.

A thought on fuel tank locations.  For those considering putting one under
the cockpit, as original, take a good look at the stuffing box.  Without a
tank down there it ain't fun to adjust, with a tank in the way the thought
gives me nightmares.
