Hi Bill,
My boat had a leak from the stern tube. Turned out the stern tube had turned
out of the cutlass bearing fitting a bit, and was allowing water by.
The volvo that the previous owner put in my boat cut off all access behind
the engine. I put an access panel hatch, about 18 x 22, in the forward end of
the cockpit sole. Now there is great access to the stuffing box, cockpit
scupper seacocks, engine cooling pump, etc. It was a Bomar hatch. It gives a
little underfoot, so I plan to make a nice strong cockpit grating that will
go over it.
Hope this helps,
Lee

runs down in to the bilge from the stern. The underside of the cockpit floor
is dry, the lazaret is dry, I must conclude that I have a leak in the
stuffing box for the rudder post.
I read the article in the maintenance manual about cutting an access door
in to the wall of the cockpit locker, but what am I getting myself in to.
Has anyone had to do any work on the rudder post stuffing box.
I can not imagine trying to do anything one handed and without being able to
see it. By the way, SallyB is in the water.
Thanks for your help.
