I have one spreader of White oak-it's held up well for close to 30 years,
and one of red oak (white oak was unavailable where I was) that is holding
at 20 years.
Biggest problem that I see is fore and aft movement causes the bolt hole
to 'egg', which then allows fresh water into the grain of the wood..

P.S. It is a straightforward do-it yourself job; I made one while living on
the boat with a jig saw and hand plane. On the other hand, upgrading to the
later model aluminum spreaders is appealing too.
