Chris, have been doing this for several years now, using a good SSB.  It is
outstanding and I highly reccomend it to anyone who is considering cruising
outside the US.  With a good SSB, the pictures you get are quite clear, and
there is alot of additional weather info other than the maps.  I use them,
along with talking to Herb Hilgenberg (12359 USB), and it has greatly
improved my own weather forecasting capabilities.  I know a number of people
who have tried using the small Grundig receivers and other similar ones, all
have quickly graduated to a full marine SSB radio.  I have the ICOM 710 V2
and it is quite a good unit.  There are a number of weather fax programs, I
have Coretex which was simple to install and use.  Some of the other ones
have not enjoyed this easy installation comment.
