In order for the laser/ transit/dumpy/builders/water level to work the
boat must be set up on the hard level fore and aft and athwartships. It
is always a good idea to put bottom paint a little higher than the line
to account for extra weight in the boat during the season or during
extended cruising loads. Bill Mcintoshes book "BUILDING A WOODEN BOAT"
also has a poor mans way of striking the waterline using two level
string lines set up athwartships at the fore and aft of the boat and
using two people, one for the eyeball and one at the boat for pencil
marking. This method only requires the boat and strings be level
athwartships. I have used this method and it works great. Chris
