A vang's primary purpose is to hold the boom down, particularly in going
downwind when the full sail tends to lift it. An ordinary 4-part tackle
works fine for this, and has the advantage of doubling as a preventer
when you want it. A cascaded 4-part and 2-part will give you more
leverage. I've never used a rigid vang, but it can also act as a
topping lift.

I've set the list to strip off attachments. You wouldn't believe how
many viruses get sent to the list. I'm afraid that one of them will use
a from-address corresponding to a list subscriber and get distributed.
Also, many people have limited bandwidth or email storage allocations.
I presume you're referring to
http://www.alberg30.org/pictures/contributed/sailing499a.jpg Yes,
that's a spectacular photo. Joe was the Associations Secretary (and
Mainsheet editor) in 2001, when he was living in New Jersey. (As an
aside, his contributions should be an inspiration to those members who
don't live in the Annapolis area. While the distance was a disadvantage
for him, Joe did a yeoman's job. If you go through the back issues,
you'll also see that he's been an active contributor of articles.)
Unfortunately, Joe's job took him to St. Croix USVI, where that photo
was taken. (I should be so unlucky!) You can reach him at
