[Alberg30] broken tillers?

HI George;
    When I bought 528, at the connection there were bolts both horizontally
(expected ) and vertically through the tiller that was attached to the
rudderpost and an apparently new spare in the locker. I thought the new one
looked light so made a new one from Hickory ( laminated 3/16th" strips and
West System epoxy) and have had no trouble since with some fairly big wind
days on Lake Erie and some fairly good races on Lake Ontario. The biggest
waves we have been in have been about 10 feet, trough to crest, with a
period of about 50 feet or so, and that was not in a storm. I have since
added an extension with no troubles to the tiller.
    We tried to take some of the slop out of the rudder post by filling the
holes and redrilling, but it just got a wee bit too hot and all melted, so
built a new one out of stainless. Most difficult was milling the keyway in
the cylindrical hole. So far, all working well. I still carry the spare.
