[Alberg30] Knee hull separation

On the Chesapeake it was fairly common to have to redo the forward lower shroud attachments on the newer boats because of bond failure. It was evident after looking at the way the attachments were failing that they where under designed and needed to be enlarged to better carry the loads. On Quest the knees were remade--the overall length was increased maybe 3 or 4 inches and very carefully glassed in. Whitby didn't use alot of glass, if I remember right there may have only been a single laminate of that heavy roven stuff. The corners weren't filled ...it was just a minimal job. It's an easy fix. If your going off shore I'd beef 'em up just to show some respect to Neptune. While your horsing around with the forward lowers you ought to consider increasing the attachment hardware to 5/16" bolts. Use bolts with the correct grip length as opposed to full threads. The 1/4" full threads bolts used by Whitby cause a "sawing" action that slots the holes which can lead to snap loading which will only hasten failure. I borrowed a right angle drill from work and was able to redrill without taking everything out.

Could it be that A30's that have been used extensively in racing or ocean
sailing ( excessive rigging tension ) have 2 problems in common, 1) the mast
beam and 2) the forward lower knee / hull bond?

I know of one "knee / hull bonding" repair on an A30. It included the knee
to be completely re-done and adding 24 inches to the length of the new knee.

The new knee goes through the shelf and bunk plywood. It is glassed all the
way.

Something that I plan on doing before my Atlantic crossing in 2004.
