Mike is absolutely right! If you have had any water enter the engine
through the exhaust ports it can create a "water lock" or hydraulic lock
as it is sometimes called. When the cylinder with the water in it comes
up on the compression stroke it just locks up the engine because the
water (unlike air) will not compress thus the engine can not be turned
over. When you remove the plugs of coarse this gives the water a place
to go. As Mike said ... stand clear! 

This sounds more likely what has happened. I am not sure if you said how
much time had elapsed but I would think that for the engine to seize up
due the corrosive effect of the water entering the engine, it might take
a bit longer period of time than you indicated.
