I think 15-20 Hp is probably ideal. I don't regret putting a 30HP engine in
my boat, but it is more power than needed. My reasoning at the time was that

the new engine (Universal M430) had the exact same dimensions and mounting
locations as the Atomic 4. The critical measurements were:

Front of engine - to - centerline of forward mounts
Back of flange - to - center of rear mounts
Distance between mounts
Height of engine - from - mount to top of engine
Depth of engine - from - mount to bottom of pan

Since this particular engine met those dimensions, I was able to install the

enigine myself without modifying the engine bed and saving myself about $
2,000 - $3,000 in costs. I did not want to cut up the boat to install a new
engine. The new engine also weighs in at 50# lighter than the A4, so I am a
happy camper.

A picture of my installation can be found on the A30 website at:

If I need an engine today I would look take a serious look at the Beta
Marine engine who makes a 20HP Atomic 4 replacement. See them at:

Hope this helps. It's fun installing your own engine. The only thing I broke

was my little finger on my left hand in three places.

Mike,
You stated that you install a 30hp Universal in #505. you also said
it's more power than you need. If you were to do all again, would you use a
20hp.
