Yikes -
Horrible story! I heard of that happening to a diesel a few years ago.
The owner of that boat told me that it was a good practice to drain the
water lift muffler if cranking for more than a few seconds... stock Whitby
up-pipes have a little drain cock on them. Sorry to offer this story too
late.
