[Alberg30] New Main Sail

Dave:
I have had a full battened North main for the last 6 years that I have
owned the boat. The sail was built in the early 90's to the best of my
knowledge, and I still have a straight track. I just bought a new one this
year from North Toronto and as luck would have it it was also built in
Toronto. It is a 2 + 2 because they don't like having to pay UPS extra for
shipping full battens. However it is easy to adjust the shape of this new
sail to whatever me or my crew would like when racing. I priced 4 different
makers and they were all within $100. CDN for a main at last year's Toronto
boat show. I did not price Doyle's because their loft in Sarnia often cuts a
small sail relative to the max allowed. As for cloth, I believe that both
Challenge and Contender are American and that one is made by the son of the
original cloth maker. (After one of those family disputes, the impetuous
younger generation thought he knew more than Dad, so went out on his own).
North makes all their own dacron. I believe Polyant is the French cloth
maker.
It would appear as if there are three sailmakers who have made a number
of Alberg 30 sails and they are Triton in Port Credit Ont. ( Joe Fernandez,
the original sailmaker for Whitby once Tom Taylor closed his loft), North
and Haarstick. Why stay in Traverse city if there are others who have more
knowledge for the original cut?
