[Alberg30] A 30 eng

VC 17 is a terrific paint - in fresh water - probably the best. In salt it
will be largely ineffective against barnacles. VC Offshore is not like VC
17, the paint becomes ineffective if hauled out for more than 60 days like
traditional paints. It is not (VC Offshore) rated very highly by Practical
Sailor for longevity. I would suggest Pettit's Unepoxy Plus or some of the
other hard paints as they are scrapable after growth starts, usually in the
2nd or 3rd year. They will give you with proper attention to a smooth finish
the closest performance to VC 17 ( but not quite as fast - I was astounded
how much faster my A-30 was when we converted her to VC-17 ( racing in light
air). It's the Teflon - but there is only 17% copper in it.

The other problem with VC 17 is if you convert to a paint for salt water you
have to get every bit of the VC off as the Teflon in the paint will cause
adhesion problems. That means a lot of acetone - an awful lot and tons of
rags or cloths.

The ablatatives are also an option though they won't give you as good a
speed edge as you enjoyed with VC 17. Also ablatives because of the
sloughing nature of the paint leave their chemicals on the ocean floor. I
suspect they will be the next to be banned.

When we go South, my preference will be for the highest performing hard
paint - with greatest longevity. At least with hard paints one can control
to a large degree where the paint goes when sanding it on the hard using
vacuum attachments on the sander.

All of this is of course my own personal bias and I'm sure there are as many
opinions on the matter as their are boat names.

Best regards,

John
