[Alberg30] hull and deck joint

Hi Mike,
Did you put the new fasteners in the same rivet holes after drilling them
out?
When you say #10 flat-head machine screws, are they an actual screw type or
thru bolt type with nut and lock/washer?
I have noticed some leaking under the rail of my boat and wonder if a good
calking next spring will solve the problem.
I can see all the rivets and thru bolts in the Genoa track area.
Water seems to be leaking in a few spots actually running down the length of
certain rivets.
Thanks
Bob

The rivets are aluminum, and having removed the cap rail on several boats,
in many cases there is just powder where the rivets used to be. If the joint
between the cap rail and the hull is kept well calked every year, this does
not happen, but it salt water enters the joint the rivets corrode away. I
replaced mine with #10 flat-head machine screws and sealed the jont with 3M
5200.

Mark,
The only hull-deck joint problems of which I'm aware have been precipitated
by collisions. There's no doubt, though, that through-bolts would be
stronger, and when the rail is off, I'd recommend replacing the rivets with
machine screws.
