[Alberg30] Universal Diesel Power

Roger: the Universal M-18 was a group buy, 2 cyl diesel sometime in the
1980's. It is a good, reliable engine which is commonly used to run
referigeration units on land. With a clean bottom, it will push the boat in
excess of 6kts in flat water with a 2 blade prop. Its performance in
anything else is dependent on the nature of the wave, swell, and wind. It
is actually a marinized Kubota tractor engine, and parts for the engine
itself (not the cooling system or transmission) should be available from
Kubota for a significant savings over the Universal/Westerbeke like item.
The trans is a Hurth 50, I think.

(So why the heck didn't they call it the 14? Life's mysteries abound.)
It has a 2 blade prop, automatic bleed (that I do not know how to work) and
about 500 hours run time. (Why don't engines ever walk?)

1/2 gal per hour (11 gal tank). I have also power sailed upwind
successfully in 1 to 2 foot seas but have not been out in high winds and/or
seas. Can anyone with this motor report on it's performance in these
conditions? Any opinions on weather a three blade prop would strain the
engine too much? Does anyone know what stocks will appreciate over 30% in
the next week?
