If previously painted some sanding is required especially if there is any 
loose areas. Then wipe down with Acetone to remove any oil or other stuff. 
If there is mildew, wipe down with a mixture of clorox and TSP (Tri Sodium 
Phosphate) to kill mold spores. Once the surface is clean and dry, you are 
ready to paint. This can be a rather big and time-consuming job. Take your 
time and try to enjoy it, it is not hard, it just takes time. Like any paint 
job, the more time you spend on prep, the better the end result.

what sort of prep is needed? Anything beyond sanding, filling imperfections 
in the surface and seeing that the surface is clean and degreased?

I have used Benjamin Moore oil-based semi-gloss color 1044 with good
success. Do NOT use latex or any water-based paint.

Speaking of interior paint, what paint would be best to paint the
interior? When the interior of my boat was painted last, the head and
the V berth were not done and look rather tired and ratty. I would like
to redo them this spring so the whole interior looks good.

Any help would be much appreciated.
