Dan,

That does not sound good to me - if I were you I would keep a hammer and
some tapered wood plugs handy if I were going to touch that valve again.  Of
course if you are on the hard - then don't worry about it.  The repair is
easy - just replace the gate valves and through hulls.  I did mine last
winter/spring - took a total of about 1 full day with my 1st mate. (wife).

as a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". , i violated that
rule after three years of hearing REPLACE THE GATE VALVES.
so, it was midnight and dark and as i turn a gate valve with my handy dandy
pipe wrench, and notice the thru hull turning. in the dark it doesn't appear
broken, but would this be a candidate for the whitby do it yourself thru
hull fitting that all advise to replace?
