I consider Tim Lackey a friend. He is an unassuming, generous man who
has really helped me with the restoration of my Alberg with his time
and very helpful website. We have spoken on many occasions and he is
not some dilettante with money who takes on outrageous projects. He
worked for Hinkley for a while, is a marine surveyor and loves boats.
He will help anyone, all day long, with his generous offerings of rich
experience. I often think and have told him that wooden boats are more
to his nature than wrestling around the plastic classics. In any
event, his website has been a source of inspiration and information
than any other that I have found.
He has helped me make my Alberg a reflection of myself- a classic with
modern touches. I have replaced the front hatch with a trapezoidal
Bomar and put an aluminum toerail to replace the leaky teak. While I
still have the rebuilt A-4 engine, it has been upgraded by Old Lyme
Marina and with additions of Indigo electronic ignition and fresh water
cooling system. Whenever I have a question, I find it helpful to
consult his website. Although I have documented my project with
pictures and keep a scrapbook of sorts, his website is astounding when
you consider the breadth and depth. I'm sure it has helped many folks
tackle a project that they felt hesitant about.
As far as daysailing, I agree that the H-12 1/2 is some of the most fun
you can have. The Haven is much like the Herreschoff, but with a
retractable keel. But I prefer a self-bailing cockpit. Although I
have enjoyed boat restoration, creating projects where there are
already better solutions isn't my style. A great daysailer for me
would be the Pearson Electra, Kenner Kittiwake or Cape Dory Typhoon.
Gee, funny thing that they all seemed to be designed by a guy named
Alberg. Imagine that??
