Linc,
  Yes you can, but you have to do something to keep the shaft from sliding.
If you were leaving the engine in place, you could just leave the shaft
connected. If you're removing the engine, you have to do something else to
hold it from sliding out or in. If it slides out, it hits the rudder and
could prevent a turn. If it slides in, you have an inboard fountain for your
hot tub!
