Randy:
Racor are the American standard for diesel fuel filters and water
separators. CAV are British and a bit of a pain because they are two piece
units with a removable base that lets fuel spill on every cartridge
change. Try truck part suppliers and watch for seasonal specials. Racors
are used on Detroits, Cats, Cummins and Macks. They will be available at
Ford truck, Mack, Sterling, Freightliner, Volvo, Peterbilt and any other
dealer as well as truck sevice centres on the big roads. If you want other
options, try John Deere agricultural applications and get the base and
filter to fit your application. They have a number of 20 -50 HP diesels
in small tractors and lawn / golf course equipment.
Never filter with a small mesh filter first. Use either both the same
and 2 micron or the first at 10 and the second at 2 microns. Replace both
at once for the cost. The only things necessary to make diesels run well
are clean fuel and clean air. Water is an absolute no-no. You might want
to change the filter style once you see truck filters so that you get the
water separator as part of the primary filter. The manual tap on the
water bowl does not break the prime on the fuel pump but allows for the
draining of the water as it is separated.
