I've heard that we are having a bumper crop of spiders this year because of 
the cicadas. Their carcasses have provided an abundance of food for the 
spider popultion. I am not sure if this is true or not, but it makes some 
sense to me.

We have had an infestation of hornets and wasps, both the mud dauber and  
paper nest varieties this year. Gotten stung twice. I now use an anti-wasp 
aerosol spray, but you have to be accurate to hit em.
