I second George's reccomendation based on recent experience.  Definitely
look for a Marine-experienced automotive shop. They can test it more
thoroughly than you can, fix it if it's broke and replace it if it's
history.

Oh, another way to test the alternator is to remove it and take it to an
automotive electrical shop.
