[Public-list] Boot Stripe

Roger,
When I bought my A30, it was in the middle of a bottom job, and the boot
stripe had been removed. To determine where to put the boot stripe, we
measured a few other Albergs and took an average. Keep in mind if you have
your boat loaded differently than others, a waterline that might work on one
persons boat may not on another (ie: different engine weight, holding tank
positions, etc).
Once we had measurements down from the toerail at a few key points along the
way, I took a laser level (construction level that shoots out a laser beam)
and mounted it on a tripod so that the head of the tripod was about the same
height as the boot stripe. Then I marked the key points with pencil on the
hull and kept adjusting the level until a smooth pan from side to side with
the laser on the tripod would hit all the pencil marks (within a 1/4" or
so). We marked every couple inches with pencil while slowly panning the
laser on the tripod side to side to make the upper line. Then by cranking
the tripod down 2 inches, but leaving all the other adjustments alone, a
second line was easy to put in to mark the lower limits. With the bow and
stern's undercut, the lines naturally made the larger width at the bow and
stern.

Subject: [Public-list] Boot Stripe
Albergers,
In previous episodes I was advised there is a line in the gel coat that
represents, if not the waterline, at least the point where the boat is "on
her lines." After a few applications of paint remover and scrape, scrape,
scrape, I discovered two lines about 2-1/2" apart amidships and 5" apart at
the bow. The most recent boot stripe is about 1-1/2" higher than one that
would fit in between the lines I found. Can anyone advise me on methods to
determine where the bottom of the stripe should be. I would like to have it
as low as possible but still have only bottom paint in the water when fully
loaded. I wonder if I should just paint the hull color to a few inches
below the lower line and see where the stripe should go when she gets wet.
Thanks, Roger
