[Public-list] Roller furling - or hanked on?

Long ago I had a boat that had a downhaul on the jib. It worked
wonderfully well in getting the sail on the deck quickly. One still had
to make things neat in the deck - lest the sail fall into the
water, etc. I do not think it can be compared well to furling a jib. The
reason is that one can go part way in furling and have some sail left -
a choise not avaliavble with a hanked on jib. (One may change down or up
as needed.) The other reason is that furling is a one step rather than
two step process. Nonetheless, I think having a downhaul is better than
not having one - if hanking on is your preferred way to go. You may
guess that I have become an advocate of and user of roller furling. Age
does argue for finding easier ways to do things - especially if one
wants to be sailing when one is truly ancient.

the

Since I will be *o-l-l-d-d* and retired when I finally get my Alberg 30
(or
35, (and not terribly rich either: I have children!) I have been
wondering
if I want roller furling on the jib of my yet-to-be-purchased boat.
I'll be
cruising, not racing.
I wondered if anyone has tried downhals on hanked-on jibs and can
compare
them to the ease of dousing the jib with furling gear (until it gets
stiff
or breaks, that is. . . . )
Many thanks
