John,

I'm having a little hard time picturing what's going on from your 
description, but it's unlikely you have a serious problem.

The fiberglass is somewhat permeable, and can soak up water.  Also, the 
hull was made in port and starboard halves, which were then glassed 
together.  There's typically some fairing compound at the joint which is 
little better than auto body putty.  This is quite permeable to water.

The hull is very thick, however, and a "small crack" is unlikely to 
indicate structural damage.
