Pete,
V-berth bulkhead mounted thanks might work if cabin to deck dimension is
tall enough for depth of tanks plus adequate slope of containment box. One
problem might be no ventilation when boat is healed over (leaving tank on
the high side).
I found 5 lb. (horizontal or vertical tanks) 20" long (without valve) x
7-3/4" high (diameter). There might be room to mount tanks vertically at
the aft outside corners of the main cabin (just aft of the picture windows)
with access through the cabin top; don't know what impact loosing the
interior volume at the corners will have.
I suppose one could mount vertical tanks just forward of the bulkhead
forward of the V-berth and ventilate them through the side of the hull. I
imagine this part of the hull is out of the water except when punching
through a waves going upwind. Access could be via round access ports in the
deck (it's pretty flat on the fore deck). Like the lazarette instillation,
you would still have the problem of adding containment boxes in a confined
space. Of course, if you were planning on ramming anything, this location
could produce explosive results.
Other potentially unrealistic ideas. Dorade boxes on steroids; place them
inside of mock dorade boxes on the aft end of the lower cabin top. Mock
life raft canister; put them inside one of those FG life raft canisters
mounted just aft of the mast (has added advantage of people thinking you are
a blue water curser [or a high risk sailor]). Mock radar reflector; paint a
long, thin tank white and mount it on the forward side of the mast
pretending it is one of those canister type radar reflectors (definitely
works best if aggressive ventilation is your goal but need a boson's chair
to change the tank). Combination tank and generator; wield on angled fins,
tow behind boat attached to one of those water generators (requires one heck
of a rotary valve in the gas hose). Boom tank; seal both ends of the boom,
add filler fitting and valve, figure out combination boom vang/supply hose.

externally means they are exposed and probably in the way.
