[Public-list] Replacing the Atomic 4

I replaced my head gasket without milling the head. Moyer said it wasn't
neccesary, but did reccomend double gaskets. I still had poor compression on
one cylinder, but judicious use of MMO cleared it up - I think it was dirty
valves rather than rings.
It's not a terribly difficult project, but I was lucky to have a neighbor
with a torque-wrench set to get the nuts on correctly. The problem with the
project is the uncertainty in
1) Removing the bolts easily
2) Not breaking the studs - which generates a sub-project to replace them
3) What you'll find with the head off - cylinders and valve condition

compression can be slightly improved by Marvel Mystery Oil or even better
is Sea Foam which is an incredible penetrating as well as lubricating oil.
100x better that the old MMO. If you cannot find it then use MMO.
Also if you can get your hands on a compression tester check the cylinders
and see if there is a specific compression issue/loss. If so you could
simply need a new head gasket. Not a difficult project but one that does
take some time and requires that the head be milled to assure proper
refit.
Again much cheaper than replacement.
