I think a barrier coat is unnecessary and risky.  (I doubt Whitby used 
any epoxy, too.  Polyester was pretty cutting edge, still, at the time.)

My feeling is that boats get wet.  Hauling them out every year or two 
and letting them dry out does a world of good.
