[Public-list] Engine alignment question

The one thing that I did to get is so close was to make sure that the
cutlass bearing was in good shape so it held the shaft tight. Then on the
inside, I marked the shaft where it exited the shaft log. I removed the
shaft, and wraped several wraps of tape to make up the difference between
the O.D. of the shaft and the I.D. of the stern tube. That gave me
reasonable assurance that the shaft was going straight through the tube.
Assuming the tube was installed in proper alignment by the factory, then I
could make a close adjustment on the coupling. The remove the shaft, remove
the tape, and hook everthing back up, but I did not need to move the engine
or mounts.

Hi Mike,

Thx for the description. It sounds like the pros make the best estimate of
the proper shaft postion, and then align the engine to it. It seems that to
get
the shaft absolutely aligned in the cutlass bearing, I think some kind of
lining up frame would have to be set up beneath the shaft. If the pros don't
bother to get that level of exactness, I am not going to try!!!! :)

I put a 22" x 22" access panel in the forward end of the cockpit sole, so
at
least I can access the back of the engine and shaft coupling easily.

Thx again. I'll keep you posted,
Lee

Since he was "head first" over the engine, it was a bit difficult to watch
what he did [plus I didn't want to get that close]. But the process is not
that hard. He would move the engine from side-to-side until he was happy
with that plane , then use the adjustments on the flex mounts to move the
rear of the engine up and down and the front mounts to get the angle right.
He repeated the process several times checking each adjustment with a
feeler

guage until the he was within the tolerances (.004") as specified by the
manufacturer. He said that it was an easy adjustment, since I have gotten
it
very close with my initial adjustmet. There is no vibration at all.
