I read a book once.  It was about sailboats.  (Remember that Jimmy Durante
song?)

Anyway, in the book it showed a baby stay attached at the deck, above the
fwd bulkhead.  An L-shaped bracket ran half on the bulkhead,  half on the
under side of the deck there.  That bracket served as an attachment point
for a base plate with C-ring on the deck which was through bolted to the L.

I have no idea about where on the mast the other end should go.
