[Public-list] Depth sounder questions

Does anyone know if a depth sounder (Standard/Raymarine ST-41) should work when the boat is out of the water?  Mine (which is only 3 years old) was giving me trouble prior to haul out.  I cleaned the barnacles & slime off, but the display just reads - - -.  There is nothing in the manual about this.

On a related note, does anyone know a quick-and-dirty test for either the transducer or the head of a depth sounder?
