[Public-list] Help - Interior Lighting

James,

I rewired L'Esprit last year, and put in new lights in the process. I ran
in to the same question. The answer I went with was to cut a circle out of
teak, use a router to cut a small trench on the back side, and then a hole
saw drill to cut away the center. Then I could run the wire along the
ceiling and right up under the base to the fixture. The wood base was just
larger than the bottom of my random orbit sander. I picked my location and
then held the sander in place until I hit the glass, then used 5 minute
epoxy to adhere the disc to the ceiling (after slipping the wire in place
first). Then, using white plastic wire anchors and short screws I ran the
wire to the corner of the cabin (above the stove in this case) and down.

Also, I should mention, I ran 14 gauge wire for this light with a white
jacket, which blends in pretty well with the ceiling paint... much better
than the old brown wire would have.

I may be running over to the boat later today, and I can take a photo if
you'd like to see.

Another project I started last year and hope to finish before this season is
low power LED lighting inside the side lockers above the seats in the main
cabin, in the head locker, hanging locker, and cockpit seat lockers. I
found an LED fixture in the JC Whitney catalog with 50 amber LEDS (or you
could get RED also) for about $15. They are bright enough to see what you
need to get without affecting night vision as much. I bought a bunch of
magnetic switches like those used on a door for an alarm system. I plan to
hook those to cabinet doors, so when you open a hatch, they turn on. That
might be something you could consider as well for additional lighting.

Subject: [Public-list] Help - Interior Lighting

Hello all.

I realize that this is a rather simple matter but it's one task that
I've never done on a boat before. I need to install interior light
fixtures on the Alberg and I saw overhead dome lights at Defender that
looked pretty nice. They also came with white and red bulbs which would
come in handy at night. The problem is this: how do I attach them to the
boat? Can I just drill a small pilot hole for the screws into the
overhead? No, I don't have a liner; it's a '66.

The other question is how do I hide the wires? I imagine they would look
pretty nasty running across the top of the cabin towards the lights.

Thanks,
