Richard, I think the old winches on my boat were Barton's - only 1 speed, not
ST,  and the barrels were worn almost smooth. They  had 6 bolts. The
Andersen's used only 5 bolts but the pattern matched exactly. It seems to me
that I recall that the Andersen's took a 1/4" bolt and the Barton's were
5/16ths. That did not make any sense but was the way it was!  I moved the old
winches back to the rear pedestals for the  spinnaker. If the bolt pattern
does not match, then fill the holes and I would reinforce the pedastal from
below with a layer of stiched,  unidirectional glass and mat and redrill as on
the template required. If the bolt pattern is very close to the new template,
you might want to consider using the one inch SS fender washers that are used
in automotive applications for added backing if you do not have a backing
plate for the winch.
