As Mike says, the wrapping can trap moisture and allow rust you can't 
see. My boat had a galvanized section of exhaust pipe and it broke in 
the middle of the Bay in a calm that lasted all day. I was able to get 
the water in the exhaust overboard, but the diesel exhaust fumes spread 
black oily specks everywhere. A real mess, so it's worth checking your 
exhaust pipe every once in a while. (And ours was not as old as the 
boat.  The engine had been replaced about five years previously.) The 
other issue we had with the Westerbeke was the rigid tubing
going to the injectors that broke. There needs to be a flex section in 
there because of the vibration.
