[Public-list] boat on ebay

Speaking as an outsider; An A30 owner wannabe, I think superb examples of
the class attract people to the class and grimy messes sort of turn people
off to a make of boat.

My problem with buying a derelict is that the cost of bringing it up to a
nice looking boat with functioning systems is more than I can buy a boat for
that doesn't need all the work and investment. If a boat hasn't been used
in a while, most of its systems are questionable. That means you are going
to put hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in an engine, electronics,
sails, rigging, electronics, galley, etc. From my novice point of view,
better to buy one that has everything in running condition. Yes, there are
those who think their boat is made out of gold, but many owners will accept
a fair price for a decent boat which means I probably pay 50 cents or less
on the dollar for all those enhancements. Guys, if your 40 year old boat
hasn't had anything done to it but break fixes, its probably not going to
fetch you 20,000.

For what it is worth, probably about two cents, the
association is incredibly valuable and a very
effective support tool for Alberg owners - all of
them. To shift our focus toward salvage and
procurement may only serve a select few. But more
importantly, it sounds as if we are making the
assumption that we are the only ones to value this
boat.

In my opinion, someone will step up. That person will
probably come to the Association and thus enhance the
Association through their membership, participation
and experience. We as a group gain so much more from
the addition of a boat AND owner. Keep the gene pool
fresh... mention the boat on ebay to your friends!
