No apology required!  I have had my coffee and am not so simple and literal
as I was...

Yes, setting the screws in a caulking compound is the way to do it.

The garboard is the first plank port and stargoard along the keel of a
wooden boat.  Because it is at the demarcation between the boat's skin, her
skeleton (both somewhat flexible) and the immovable external ballast this
plank is the cause of much debating as to the best way to prevent leaks.  In
my old boat her garboards also crossed the long scarf joint between the keel
timber and her rising stem...  The mast step was inconveniently just above
this area.  She had an irritating tendency to be tight when at rest but open
up when both she and I were under stress; such as 2AM while beating to
windward in bad weather and big waves far offshore.

I often get homesick for that boat but ...
