First, you need to think about what you're looking for.  Do you want to 
visit towns and cities?  Do you want to anchor in quiet gunkholes?  Are 
you looking to maximize sailing or visiting?  Allow time for the 
unexpected, both good (finding something you want to explore further) 
and bad (weather or equipment delays).

For towns, I like Oxford.  There's not a whole lot to do there, but 
that's its charm.  You can get a nice meal at the Robert Morris Inn, 
poke around in the Oxford Mews, relax in the town park overlooking the 
water, get a shower at Oxford Boat Yard, view the boats at Cutts and Case.

Anytime other than July & August.

I really like the Shellenberger guide 
(http://www.alberg30.org/store/Amazon.html#GunkholersGuide), but that's 
because I tend toward the remote rather than the towns.
