[Public-list] deck stains

There are numerous stains on the deck gelcoat of my boat from sloppy previous wood refinishing jobs.  The woodwork had Cetol on it when I bought it, and so I presume the stains are Cetol, but don't know that for sure.  Any suggestions on how to remove these stains?  What solvent?  Acetone with a rag was not enough.  What if anything is safe to brush, or even lightly scrape, gelcoat with? 
By the way, just had woodwork done with Cetol Light topped with Cetol Gloss.  Looks great, in case any of you are considering going in that direction.
