Gordon-

As I stated before many times, I am in favor of ballasting to correct the
change in weight. I would prefer to carry ballast instead of the defunct
motor because I can make ballast something useful. Lead-acid ballast for
example can provide electrical power! And it doesn't stink.

As to the prop issue, we spoke on that already. I really don't believe that
a 2-blade prop aligned with the aperture (as any competent racer does) will
have any more drag than no prop, because the flow in that area is fully
developed and the prop is directly in the turbulent wake of the deadwood.

But I might be wrong.

A 3-blade prop is, of course, another story. That definitely would make a
difference.

Subject: [Public-list] Re: outboards

Seems to me the rules are looking for an inboard engine and a
propellor on the propellor shaft on all A-30s. I don't suppose it makes
much difference in boat speed if someone brings an outboard along. He
can take it off the stern and stow it during the race. Probably leaving
it hanging off the stern will slow him down, for all that's worth, but
the rules seem to want an inboard engine and its propellor, even if it's
inoperative. Doesn't seem difficult to do that. I do think removing the
original propellor would give such a boat an advantage, else why do
folks go to the expense of folding props, maxi-props, etc.?
