Pete,
Not sure if this is what you are talking about but I have been using my 
"Articulated tiller" for years and cannot understand why others that 
use an autopilot have not done the same.

The rudder post connection is the same as original but I have the 
tiller hinged just forward of the autopilot fitting so that when using 
the autopilot, the tiller forward of this hinge can be pivoted to a 
vertical position. This means that the cockpit is not obstructed by the 
tiller except for the 18 inches or so needed by the autopilot. The 
result is that the danger of falling on the tiller and breaking it 
while under autopilot is almost nil, (which is why I installed it in 
the first place).

I am sure that pictures of this were published on this list many years 
ago. If you are interested and can't can't find them, I'll see if i can 
find some for you.
