I used to be chief engineer and occasional first mate in command of a 
single-screw 125 foot  Norwegian  "tall ship" in Alexandria. The 
technique for backing her  was to give as strong a burst of power as the 
50 year old Mercedes truck engine in her could manage, shut off the 
power and use the way created to direct her, then another burst, etc. 
Worked, but you had to have nerves of steel.
