Last winter I replaced all the standing rigging on Zipalong (#33) due to looks and unknown age. (my best estimate would be from 20-40 years old) After all the e-mails over the past couple of weeks, I decided to re-inspect the old rigging
The backstay turnbuckle had the most play with the threads, about 1/4 of one thread on each section of the turnbuckle. The upper side's each had about 1/5 of one thread. The lower side turnbuckles had no play, but the upper eye on each wire had all been drilled out to accept a 7/16'' pin.
From the archives, I discovered the previous owner had lost the roller furling headstay 3-4 years ago. He replaced the wire, but not the turnbuckle. The rigging company reworked the wire, but said the turnbuckle needed replacement. I did not inspect that turnbuckle as it's MIA, but I suspect it also had some play in it.
The old turnbuckle's had been attached directly to the chain plates without toggles. The new lines all have toggles for the chainplates. The four primary wires also have toggles at the top.
This is my second season with Zipalong & I knew that it was past time to replace the rigging. Next weekend, the 5/16 inch chainplate hardware gets installed!
Earlier this evening I just happened to be rewiring Rascal (#145) with the big cheese of the Indianapolis Alberg Assn., Mr Dan Walker. The inspection of his rigging provided similar results. (easily accomplished as his mast is parallel to the ground) His wires had been replaced a few years ago, but not the turnbuckles. So now, Dan will be replacing all his turnbuckles. (Dan also has lots of used brown lamp cord if anyone needs it!!)
Thanks to everyone on the website for the constant flow of information.
