Thanks for your suggestion Ed.

I stand corrected - the vang we actually have now (with a bail) is not the
original one. After reading Don Campbell's  "vang" response, I remembered
the original one was a strap and metal piece that slid into the groove on
the boom...it went overboard a very long time ago.

...and our thanks to Don Campbell,  for the "physics of vangs" explanation.

We're going to re-think this over the winter and add it to the projects on
our expanding work list.
