I would think using thread count as a micrometer would 
affect engine compression, as far as milling the block 
deck is concerned.

Almost 40 years, marine environment, sea water cooling, 
and  meticulous maintainance (all sailboat engines are, I 
am sure) that engine doesn't owe anybody anything.

If you have an engine that vintage running, great, but at 
some point in it's life cycle a dead horse is being 
beaten.
