[Public-list] spinnaker halyard, Weight Aloft

Gord,
I also have a good sailor friend who is always harping about the weight aloft issue. I have to keep telling him, My God man consider the circumstances! Yes two pounds of weight 40 feet in the air does creat a moment arm, but it is counter balanced by 1200 pounds 4.5 ft under the water line.

Crusing the North Channel in an Alberg 30 is somewhat a different situation than racing the America's Cup, or Key West race week for that matter. It all does add up and if you find yourself in a hurricane with bare poles you want the 5/16" halyards and not the 1/2" ones, but come on you probably have more opportunity of slipping on a banana peel, falling and hitting your "Funny" bone, hee, hee. ;-)

  Michael

I got into a discussion with a fellow about the weight of halyards and
blocks.... On an 18' dory! I had to tell him that in some boats no
instrument could measure the harm a few ounces twenty odd feet aloft would
cause. I think in boats like ours your ability to efficiently handle the
halyards out-weighs the stability and windage saved using lighter line.

My two cents worth (as usual)
