    You might try Lee Valley and check their hardware catalogue for 
drawer locks that would fasten tothe dropboards and be long enough to 
bve effective on the hatch cover yet be out of the way if open to avoid 
damage to cushions etc.  The trouble with any protruding steel bar into 
the hatch cover area is that it might hit a head and that could be far 
worse than damage to a cushion, especially if the diesel goes south and 
the wind is at 25 kts! You might want to consider a sliding steel bar 
that could be held  ahead enough in the slide so that there is no 
protrusion when the hatch is open.
